" Are you sick of always reading reviews of the same bands at the newsstand? There is so much music out there, oftentimes we find ourselves simply perched at the tip of the iceberg. Here is your pick-axe. Break through to the other 90% of the music realm..."

...and from out of the woodwork...landing here for just a moment to show you that i do still in fact exist...

so, i have this new job. a corporate shin-dig that makes my punk skin crawl, but nevertheless useful in such mundane tasks as paying the bills and whatnot.

its cubicle nation all the way and "dilbert" and "office space" associations aside, what gets me through is the tunes emanating from the small radio i have at the side of my computer.

alas, i need to buy a cd player, so that i can play one of the many thousand cds i have on my shelves at home, but until then, this cassette player does suffice.

at first, i just recorded all of the radiohead albums and played them until they broke (literally). so now i have moved on to something new...or should i say, something old...

i dug through the boxes of tapes spanning back to my childhood and found some real jewels. here are some suggestions for a nostalgia trip of your own...

1) love and rockets -- seventh dream of a teenage heaven:

the first album under this nom de plume for these ex-bauhaus pioneers differs from their past work and only hints at the future of this band. this one is still a personal favorite of mine, stretching back from my teen years.

2) public image limited -- cassette:

obviously also called album or compact disc depending on the format in which you own it, the simplicity of the name varies greatly from the complexity of the songs. this was my first PiL album and though many hardcore fans panned it, i personally find low-era bowie-esque "ease" one of the greatest songs ever committed to record.

3) sigue sigue sputnik -- dress for excess:

certainly a band that was well before their time, this sophomore release delves more into the electronic debauchery this band did best. i hear they have reunited, god save us all...

4) r.e.m. -- life's rich pageant:

dare i say this is when r.e.m. was still good? i sort of got lost around document and though i found the recent up impressive, i think it was the naiveté of early works such as this that really defined the band.

5) pj harvey -- dry:

more of a college favorite for me, this one still stands as my favorite pj harvey album. "sheela-na-gig" is still such a classic song and the pure, primitive emotions on this album still have me in awe today. this ain't no "little fish swimming in the water," this is the shark eating it...

6) the cure -- standing on the beach -- the singles:

certainly not as good as the old albums in their entirety, but this one serves as a great sampler for those who are trying to not alienate their neighboring coworkers too much...

7) morrissey -- bona drag:

another compilation, but this one certainly gathers morrissey's most classic work outside of the seminal smiths. his other work can be a bit dodgy at times, so if you do not have it, bona drag is a great starting point.

8) depeche mode -- violator:

hands down still my favorite of all of the DM releases. the dark and exquisite quality of this one still gives me goosebumps. save for the hits like "personal jesus" and this one could be one of the greatest albums of all time.

9) lou reed -- berlin:

one of the darkest albums ever made in rock, i personally find this to be lou reed's best work. of course aficionados might argue that transformer beats it by a country mile, but i still think this is one of the most deeply disturbing, yet eerily beautiful works he ever did. heroin never sounded so good...

10) b52's -- whammy!:

on the far other end of the spectrum from lou reed's berlin, what better pick me up to a dull day than the b52's? most of their old work is equally good, but i have always had a soft spot for whammy. these are truly songs for a future generation...

note from the author: you can even buy these on CDs if you'd prefer....
